WHAT TO WEAR

Getting everyone ready in the morning on a regular day can be chaotic. Add the stress of wanting to look your best for photos and it can quickly become a headache! I want your session to be as stress free as possible. There are no rules — these are some suggestions I’ve found to work over the years.

Be Comfortable and Be Yourself

This is the most important thing in my mind. We may be outdoors, sitting on the ground, running around with little ones. My hope is that you dress in something that is easy to move around in and also reflects who you are as a family. Not to say you can’t dress up a little, but keep comfort in mind! Wear your favorite sundress that falls the way you like it. Let your 5 year old wear a worn in t-shirt. Those sparkly rain boots your 3 year old wears every day — totally acceptable. Ditch the heels and wear your sandals that you can walk around in easily. You should look and feel like yourself.

Color Coordination

My rule of thumb with color coordination is to pick a star color or piece in your wardrobe and go from there. Have that color pop in a couple places then add 2-3 other colors that go with that same palette. Sandy pink as the star, then sage green, khaki/tan and white for example. Think about the environment we are shooting in. If outdoors opt for natural colors that compliment or pop in the greens of a field or soothing colors that mimic the water. I always tell clients that light and airy is my favorite but do not feel limited to that if you love color! If you do go with a richer color, pair it with some muted tones as well for balance.

Texture, Pattern and Movement

I love the way a long flow-y dress photographs, the way lace looks against tiny toddler hair, smocking at the collar, embroidery, cozy sweaters, gauzy cotton and soft silk. Think about adding interest to your wardrobe with varying textures and layers. Subtle patterns like light florals or checks and flannels are great. Do not feel you need to go over board here. A little bit goes a long way!
